Mcfarlane College Football Series 2 Figure Matt Ryan Boston

Boston College: Hard to believe it took a future NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year a season and a half to win Boston College's starting quarterback job, but once Matt Ryan emerged for the Eagles there was no turning back. He put together a 25-7 record in 32 collegiate starts, winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and Manning Awards, as well as being named ACC Player of the Year following his senior season.

Black Galaxy Note 2 spotted, reportedly coming in early 2013

Android Central

Rumors of new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 colors are nothing new, and nothing particularly surprising, given the diverse palette of Galaxy S3 colors now available. Since the phone's launch, though, many have to been hankering for a Galaxy Note 2 in classic black. If the latest rumors are to be believed, that's exactly what'll be coming in early 2013.

Czech blog AndroidSlash has come across a high-res press render of a Note 2 in black. And, well, it's a Galaxy Note 2. In black. Interesting to note is that the black Note 2 seems to retain its faux-metal texture, whereas the black Galaxy S3 lost this effect in favor of glossy plastic effect.

There's speculation that this, and other Note 2 color variants, will be shown at Mobile World Congress in February. But remember Samsung's also going to be at CES in just over a week, so there's a chance we might see the Note 2's new coat of paint sooner than expected. Lucky for you, we'll be reporting live from both shows in the new year.

Anyone want to place bets on when the inevitable perry pink version will appear?

An image gallery gift from NASA's Swift

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Of the three telescopes carried by NASA's Swift satellite, only one captures cosmic light at energies similar to those seen by the human eye. Although small by the standards of ground-based observatories, Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) plays a critical role in rapidly pinpointing the locations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the brightest explosions in the cosmos.

But as the proxy to the human eye aboard Swift, the UVOT takes some amazing pictures. The Swift team is celebrating eight years of UVOT operations by collecting more than 100 of the instrument's best snapshots in a web-based photo gallery (http://www.swift.psu.edu/uvot/coolPics.php). The images also can be viewed with the free Swift Explorer Mission iPhone app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/swift-explorer/id465669299?mt=8) developed by the Swift Mission Operations Center (MOC), which is located in State College, Pa., and operated by Penn State.

Swift has detected an average of about 90 GRBs a year since its launch in 2004. "When we aren't studying GRBs, we use the satellite's unique capabilities to engage in other scientific investigations, some of which produce beautiful images from the UVOT that we're delighted to be able to share with the public," said Michael Siegel, the lead scientist on the UVOT and a research associate in astronomy and astrophysics at the MOC.

The targets range from comets and star clusters to supernova remnants, nearby galaxies and active galaxies powered by supermassive black holes.

"One of our more challenging projects in the past was completing an ultraviolet mosaic of M31, the famous Andromeda galaxy," said Stefan Immler, a member of the Swift team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Because the galaxy is so much larger than the UVOT field of view, we had to take dozens of pictures and blend them together to show the whole object."

An ongoing mosaic project targets the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two small satellite galaxies orbiting our own, and makes the Andromeda effort look like child's play. Although the galaxies are much smaller than M31, they are both much closer to us and extend over much larger areas of the sky. The task involves acquiring and aligning hundreds of images and is far from complete.

With the UVOT's wavelength range of 1,700 to 6,000 angstroms, Swift remains one of few missions that study ultraviolet light, much of which is blocked by Earth's atmosphere.

The 6.5-foot-long (2 meter) UVOT is centered on an 11.8-inch (30 cm) primary mirror. Designed and built by the Mullard Space Science Laboratory in Surrey, England, the telescope module includes the primary and secondary mirrors, an external baffle to reduce scattered light, two redundant detectors -- only one has been used to date -- and a power supply.

Each detector lies behind an identical filter wheel. The wheel holds color filters that transmit a broad range of wavelengths as well as devices called grisms, which spread out incoming light in much the same way as a prism spreads sunlight into a rainbow of component colors. The detectors retain information on the position and arrival time of each photon of light, an operating mode similar to typical X-ray telescopes.

Because most ultraviolet light never reaches the ground, Swift's UVOT provides a unique perspective on the cosmos. For example, it can measure the amount of water produced in passing comets by detecting the ultraviolet emission of hydroxyl (OH), one of the molecular fragments created when ultraviolet sunlight breaks up water molecules. Other types of UVOT science include exploring emissions from the centers of active galaxies, studying regions undergoing star formation, and identifying some of the rarest and most exotic stars known.

Toward the end of its energy-producing life, a star like the sun will blow away its outer layers as its core transforms into a compact, Earth-sized remnant known as a white dwarf. This chapter of stellar evolution, known to astronomers as the post-asymptotic giant branch phase, lasts only about 100,000 years -- just an eye-blink in comparison to the star's total lifetime. To better understand the process, astronomers need to study large numbers of these unusual stars.

"The UVOT's capabilities give us a great tool for surveying stellar populations and cataloging rare types of ultraviolet-bright stars," Siegel explained.

One of the first targets for the stellar survey was the giant cluster Omega Centauri, which hosts millions of stars and may be the remains of a small galaxy. Thanks to Swift's UVOT, astronomers at Goddard and Penn State have cataloged hundreds of rare stellar types in the cluster and are now comparing their properties and numbers to predictions from theoretical models describing how stars evolve.

(AP) ? The Austin police officer who helped stop Charles Whitman's 1966 sniper rampage from atop the University of Texas tower has died.

Houston McCoy fired two blasts from his shotgun to bring down Whitman, who killed 16 people during nearly two hours of terror on the UT campus. Wayne Vincent, president of the Austin Police Association, said McCoy died Thursday in the rural West Texas town of Menard.

McCoy was 72 and had been battling a terminal illness for the past year.

Whitman wounded dozens of others before McCoy and fellow officer Ramiro Martinez made their way to the observation deck. Martinez also fired on Whitman.

Vincent called McCoy a good police officer who "answered the call" unsure whether he would live upon reaching the top of the tower.

Drone use surges in Yemen, the frontline against Al Qaeda

Drone strikes in Yemen skyrocketed in 2012, as much as tripling in frequency when compared to 2011.?

In 2011, then-CIA director David Petraeus characterized the group as the ?most dangerous node in the global jihad? and the American government?s action has appeared to echo the rhetoric. Notably, the number of American airstrikes in Yemen, largely carried out by unmanned drones, has surged over the past year, as much as tripling in frequency in comparison with 2011.

The airstrikes are just one element of a multifaceted engagement in Yemen. A small number of US forces are stationed there to provide strategic assistance to the Yemeni military, while Washington has provided more than $300 million, split among military, humanitarian and development aid.

Even as the drone strikes have increased in frequency, they remain a center of debate, overshadowing most other facets of the American and Yemeni governments? efforts against AQAP.

In contrast to those in Pakistan, drone strikes in Yemen take place with the government?s permission. Yemen?s president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who took power last February in the wake of an Arab Spring-inspired uprising against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, has gone as far as publicly endorsing the strikes. That?s a marked shift from the official silence of his predecessor.

In remarks made during a September visit to the US, Mr. Hadi echoed Obama administration officials and cast the strikes as a key tool in the battle against AQAP. He explicitly contrasted the drones? capabilities with those of the aging fleet of the Yemeni air force, which is largely unable to operate at night.

Virtual women reveal more skin, regardless of body proportions

Dec. 26, 2012 ? In the virtual world of Second Life, female avatars expose substantially more skin than males, independent of their virtual body proportions, according to research published December 26 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Matthieu Guitton and colleagues from Laval University, Canada.

The human tendency to cover up stems from climatic, environmental, physical and cultural constraints, so measuring people's propensity to reveal skin can be difficult in the real world. To study human behavior free of at least some of these constraints, the researchers analyzed how male and female avatars in the virtual, 3- dimensional world of Second Life dressed. Second Life offers users options to choose the gender, appearance and attire of their virtual avatars, and users can select clothing from several items created in this virtual world, rather than being restricted to a predefined costume.

They found that out of over 400 virtual people studied, 71% of male avatars covered between 75-100% of their skin, while only 5% of females did. In contrast, 47% of the virtual females they studied covered between 25-49% of their skin, compared to 9% of males. The amount of skin covered was independent of traditional gender-specific measures of physical attractiveness for virtual avatars, such as waist-chest ratios for females. According to the study, "These findings have implications for understanding how sex specific aspects of skin disclosure influence human social interactions in both virtual and real settings."

Guitton adds, "Virtual settings provide a unique tool to study human behavior unhindered by physical and environmental constraints. This tool enabled us to find a dramatic gender difference in the propensity to disclose naked skin."

(AP Photo/Charles Krupa)

(AP) ? Mourners overlapped at back-to-back services as funerals began in earnest in a Connecticut town that lost 20 of its children and seven adults to a gunman, with emotions and tempers in tatters amid a global crush of media attention to a community once known mostly for its bucolic atmosphere and sterling school system.

At St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Newtown, a service for first-grader James Mattioli had not concluded when mourners began arriving for the funeral of little Jessica Rekos, the first of eight to be held in the coming days at the church. Several more sets of funerals and visitation hours were set throughout town Wednesday.

Students went back to classes the day before, except for those at Sandy Hook Elementary, where a lone gunman armed with a military-style assault rifle slaughtered the children, six adults and himself by the time Friday's massacre ended. He also killed his mother at her home.

Pupils at Sandy Hook, which serves kindergarten through fourth grade, will resume classes in a formerly shuttered school in a neighboring community after the winter break, the Connecticut Post reported.

"It's definitely better than just sitting at home watching the news," sophomore Tate Schwab said outside Newtown High School. "It really hasn't sunk in yet. It feels to me like it hasn't happened."

The tragedy continued to reverberate around America as citizens and lawmakers debated whether Newtown might be a turning point in the often polarizing national discussion of gun-control.

Private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management announced Tuesday it plans to sell its stake in Freedom Group, maker of the Bushmaster rifle, following the school shootings. In Pittsburgh, Dick's Sporting Goods said it is suspending sales of modern rifles nationwide because of the shooting. The company also said it's removing all guns from display at its store closest to Newtown.

A former co-chairman of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus, Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., and 10-term House Republican Jack Kingston, a Georgia lawmaker elected with strong National Rifle Association backing, were the latest to join the call to consider gun control as part of a comprehensive, anti-violence effort next year.

"Put guns on the table. Also put video games on the table. Put mental health on the table," Kingston said.

But he added that nothing should be done immediately, saying, "There is a time for mourning and a time to sort it out. I look forward to sorting it out and getting past the grief stage."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was "actively supportive" of a plan by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to introduce legislation to reinstate an assault weapons ban. While Obama has long supported a ban, he did little to get it passed during his first term.

The National Rifle Association, silent since the shootings, said in a statement that it was "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again." It gave no indication what that might entail.

Around Newtown, people had plenty of opinions about the gun debate but were focused on more immediate tasks: shaking off the fear, mourning loved ones and burying the dead.

At a wake Tuesday for 27-year-old first-grade teacher Victoria Soto, hundreds of mourners, many wearing ribbons in the school colors of green and white, stood in a line that wrapped around a funeral home in nearby Stratford. Soto has been hailed as a hero for dying while trying to shield her students, some of whom managed to escape.

"Big smile, great eyes, just a wonderful person," Lauren Ostrofsky said. "If anyone could be an example of what a person should be today, it's her."

At St. Rose, a motorcade led by police motorcycles arrived for the funeral of James Mattioli, who loved recess and math and was described by his family as a "numbers guy" who couldn't wait until he was old enough to order a foot-long Subway sandwich.

Traffic in front of the church slowed to a crawl as police directed vehicles into the parking lot. A school bus carrying elementary students got stuck in traffic, and the children, pressing their faces into the windows, sadly watched as the mourners assembled.

Immediately afterward was the funeral for Jessica Rekos, who loved horses and was counting the years until she turned 10, when her family had promised her a horse of her own. For Christmas, she had asked Santa for new cowgirl boots and hat.

Tensions in the shattered community ran high as the grief of parents and townspeople collided with media reporting on the shootings and the funerals. Police walked children to parents waiting in cars to protect them from the cameras. Many parents yelled at reporters to leave their children and the town alone.

At Newtown High, students in sweat shirts and jackets, many wearing headphones, had mixed reactions. Some waved at or snapped photos of the assembled media horde, while others appeared visibly shaken.

Students said they didn't get much work done and spent much of the day talking about the terrible events of Friday, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza, clad all in black, broke into Sandy Hook Elementary and opened fire on students and staff. Some students dismissed any concerns about safety.

"This is where I feel the most at home," P.J. Hickey said. "I feel safer here than anywhere else in the world."

Still, some parents were apprehensive.

Priscilla and Randy Bock, arriving with their 15-year-old special-needs son, James, expressed misgivings. "I was not sure we wanted him going," Priscilla Bock said. "I'm a mom. I'm anxious."

"Is there ever a right day? I mean, you just do it, you know, just get them back to school," said Peter Muckell as he took 8-year-old daughter Shannon, a third-grader, to Hawley Elementary.

At one Newtown school, students found some comfort from Ronan, an Australian shepherd therapy dog from Good Dog Foundation in New York. Owner Lucian Lipinsky took the dog to a fifth-grade science and math class where students were having difficulty coping with the tragedy. Most started smiling immediately.

Lipinsky told the students they could whisper their secrets into Ronan's ear.

"It's pretty amazing how a lot of kids will just go whisper in his ear and tell them their secret, and, of course, he doesn't tell anyone," Lipinsky said. "He's a very good dog."

Authorities say the horrific events of Friday began when Lanza shot his mother, Nancy, at their home, and then took her car and some of her guns to the nearby school, where he broke in and opened fire, killing 20 children and six adults before shooting himself.

A Connecticut official said the mother, a gun enthusiast who practiced at shooting ranges, was found dead in her pajamas in bed, shot four times in the head with a .22-caliber rifle.

Investigators have found no letters or diaries that could explain the attack, even as more fragments of Lanza's life emerged.

As a teenager, Lanza was so painfully shy that he would not speak or look at anyone when he came in for a haircut about every six weeks, always accompanied by his mother, said stylists in the Newtown hair salon Lanza frequented.

Cutting Adam Lanza's hair "was a very long half an hour. It was a very uncomfortable situation," stylist Diane Harty said, adding that she never heard his voice.

Another stylist, Jessica Phillips, said Nancy Lanza would give her son directions about what to do and where to go. He would move only "when his mother told him to," said a third stylist, Bob Skuba.

Even as questions lingered about the gunman and his motive, appreciation for those who helped students escape him persisted ? as well as devotion to preventing it from happening again.

Andrei Nikitchyuk's young son, a boy nicknamed Bear, was on his way to the principal's office with a classmate Friday morning. The children were classroom helpers tasked with the most mundane of school day chores: delivering a teacher's attendance sheets. Before they made it, the children heard a series of loud bangs that sounded like someone was slamming a door. Bear later told his dad he "saw bullets flying past."

Nikitchyuk, who was in Washington on Tuesday to support the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence's push for tougher gun regulations, said teacher Abby Clements pulled his son and the boy's classmate into a nearby classroom as the shooting started.

"He was saved by a wonderful teacher," Nikitchyuk said, his voice cracking slightly. "She pulled them into a classroom and barricaded that door."

10 Nerdy Deals to Grab at ThinkGeek

In the aftermath of Friday's Newtown school shooting, we've heard tales mostly horrifying and occasionally heroic, from surviving witnesses and mourning citizens alike, but this one lies somewhere in between, all the more unshakeable. One six-year-old Sandy Hook student played dead in her first-grade classroom, her family pastor said late Sunday, with the kind of quick thinking that ended up saving her life but now leaves her with the unshakeable memories of watching all her classmates being shot and killed. ...

Why I use a PC over a console - General Gaming - Day One Patch ...

Well yeah Doom 3 BFG doesn't look all that different??than it did on PC but you can't compare games like BF3, Sleeping Dogs, Witcher 2, and Batman Arkham City to their console counterparts.

Resolve Not To Resolve!

Why do so many resolutions not make it past the first week of January?

As we rush headlong towards the start of a New Year, isn't it amazing how time flies? Where did 2012 go to? Mind you, a new year often brings a lot of new things as people prepare for a 'fresh start', and promise to deal with many of the things that have previously held them back. New Year's Resolutions are a popular activity, and the tradition goes back as far as the Roman and Babylonian civilizations, but why do only a fraction of them work? Are people just less tenacious than they used to be, or do people just expect to break them?

Here's food for thought: The problem with resolutions may not be the resolutions themselves, but the way they are put together. People make nebulous statements which have no end point and can't be measured. Here are some examples of what I'm talking about:

"I will make more time for my family"
"I will curse less"
"I will eat less candy"
"I will be nicer to people"
"I will drink more water"

The thing that connects all of these statements is that it's impossible to know if you've achieved them. If they can't be measured and have no deadline, then how can you follow them?

So, if resolutions are a waste of time, what's the alternative? Forget resolutions. Instead, set goals that will work. Resolve NOT to resolve, and instead set yourself some achievable targets.

Have a look at these tips to help you craft some well-written goals which will guide you to great things in 2013.

Be SMART!

SMART, in this instance, stands for Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Bound. If your goals follow these tenets, then it gives you the impetus to reach the end, and you'll know when you get there! The difference between a goal and a SMART goal is the difference between 'I want to be thinner' and 'I will lose 15 pounds by 1st May'. Which is more likely to be a successful goal?

Share Your Vision.

Tell people. You are more likely to reach a goal when you've shared it with others. Keep a goal to yourself and you are less likely to reach it. Who knows why the psychology of this works, but it does. By involving others in your goals and dreams, it not only motivates you, but enables a support system for you to achieve them. Like it or not, your friend may remind you of your weight loss goal when you're reaching for the third cookie!

Write them down.

While some people might think this practice useless, it is huge. For some reason, written goals are much more likely to be achieved than goals that are not written. And don't just tuck them away, never to be seen again. Keep them visible, in your planner, on your refrigerator, or even in your Smartphone.

Check in on your goals regularly.

Make it a practice to review your goals and progress toward them regularly. Make it a routine to include checking in on your goals when you are establishing your daily or weekly plans. This keeps them alive. It also helps you make space for them in your daily or weekly plans, rather than being trumped by everyone else's "to-do's."

Celebrate.

When you've reached your goal, enjoy it! Celebrate. Plan for the celebration. One of my clients loves to attend plays. Her reward to herself for reaching one of her goals was to see a certain play when she reached her goal. She did both, and both were memorable. Some goals are very lofty and have many subparts. In this situation, celebrate incremental achievements. If you make it a practice to reward yourself or pat yourself on the back as you reach the smaller milestones, you can actually energize yourself towards the final goal. Interim milestones keep the ultimate goal present, keep your energy about them high, and a sense of accomplishment along the way.

The secret to success.

The biggest challenge about goal setting is just plain "getting to it. So instead of making a resolution set a goal (or two) this year. Write them down. Tell others. Review them regularly. Then enjoy your celebrations.

It's All Relative ? Helping Children Cope with Death and Dying ...

Posted by admin on Saturday, December 15, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Having worked in the field of bereavement counseling for over a decade I thought I had pretty much understood the importance of involving children in the grieving process. Then one day a several years back, I found my family faced with the death of a much admired, much loved uncle. Uncle Oscar died after a brief illness in May of 2001. Because our family had been very close to Uncle Oscar it was clear that we would attend the funeral with our children Ashley(8), and Justine (6). Many family members and friends supported the fact that our girls would be attending the funeral, it seemed natural given my understanding of how children grieve and given the relationship they had with him, they were grieving too. My husband and I spoke to the girls about what was to occur prior to, during and immediately following the funeral; this included what they would see, how people may react, and what the process would look like. All seemed well until I mentioned to my family that the girls would also be coming to the cemetery for the burial. This decision was met with a great deal of anxiety and apprehension from family members; so much so that I myself started to question whether this would be a good idea. Nevertheless, I decided to go with my instinct, particularly since the girls had already expressed a desire and willingness to attend.

The day of the funeral arrived and off we went to the funeral home, where the girls were met with warm smiles. The service was beautiful and both Ashley and Justine listened and watched as other family members eulogized Uncle Oscar. We then went off to the cemetery where Justine promptly made her way directly to the front of the crowd to witness the service and burial procedure. As is customary in our tradition, each mourner has the opportunity to shovel some earth into the grave to assist in the burial process. As soon as my father-in-law completed this task, he took a step back from the grave where he stood alone. Simultaneously, Justine quietly approached her Zaidie and gently held his hand. He looked down at Justine and proceeded to give her a kiss on the forehead?it was at this precise moment that I was able to confirm what I had known instinctively ? that even though this was a moment of intense grief, what better way to be reminded of how life goes on?

Later that same year the father of a friend died after a brief battle with cancer. Naturally out of respect, my husband and I attended the funeral. Our younger daughter, Justine came with us simply because we were on our way somewhere else after the service. Justine, now a veteran at attending funerals sat patiently during the service. As the procession was making it?s way to the hearse and the guests were leaving the funeral home, Justine looked up at me and promptly said, ?Hurry up Mom, I don?t want to miss the good part?.

I retell these two vignettes to emphasize that Children are not born with a fear of death and dying, we as the adults around them, we teach them this. We send a strong signals? when we say, ?A cemetery is no place for a child? or model our fears with comments and non-verbal behaviours that send out the message that something bad, or terrible happens at funerals. If we are to truly help the next generation support our elderly and their loved ones then we must begin by recognizing our own behaviour.

Some practical suggestions are as follows:

  • We need to use every opportunity to talk about life and death as part of our everyday routine. For example; when you purchase flowers, talk about how every living thing has a life ? a beginning, a middle and an end; some lives are longer, others are shorter. It?s important that we use the correct language when we talk about death ? as opposed to euphemisms, and slang words. Telling a child that someone died as a result of an accident leaves ambiguity in the mind of the child ? the word accident to most children signifies urinating in their pants.
  • We need to be HONEST, SIMPLE and say it with LOVE, no sugar-coating things: ?Bubbie died because her heart stopped working? or ?Zaidie was very, very, very sick ? a sick that couldn?t be fixed?
  • Physically place yourself eye to eye; it is helpful to sit with a child, place them on your lap or kneel down to their level so that you are not towering over them as you talk together
  • Acknowledge the developmental age of the child; while I will always advocate that parents know their children best, in general, children over the age of 5 can and should be involved in the funeral process. This is the age where children start to understand that death is irreversible which means that unlike the videos they are all too often exposed to where a character dies and then magically comes back to life when they watch the movie again, in real life living things do not come back to life.?? Keep in mind that some children are more mature than others, some cannot sit though a funeral service while others can sit quietly.
  • Children need to have someone they can trust near them explaining what is going to happen, ideally this should not be one of the mourners (this includes the variety of emotional reactions they may witness or they themselves may have ? and remember: feelings aren?t right or wrong, they just are!).
  • Don?t wait until a funeral to bring your children to the funeral home or cemetery ? Why wait? Often the first time a child enters a funeral home or cemetery is when someone close to them has died. Instead take the opportunity to bring them to a funeral when the service is not for a close relative/friend, or go visit a deceased relative at the cemetery on a nice day when you can explain what happens without the same emotional reaction that occurs when someone close to you or them has died.

Ultimately, helping children cope when a death occurs is comprised of 3 basic elements:

????????????????? 1) Information: Who died, how did they die, how will this affect me?

2) Choice: Should I attend the funeral?

????????????????? 3) Support: Who is going to be there for me now?

In order to comfortably respond to our children we need to understand where our fears/phobia?s and attitudes come from. We must find the appropriate people and places to express our concerns, share our thoughts and address our needs so that the future generation understands that death is simply a part of life. In the words of Morrie Schwartz (from Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albiom)

?If we can teach this to our children then we can truly die without every really going away?Death ends a life, not a relationship?.

Russia rejects blame in death of ex-spy Litvinenko

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia denied on Friday that it was involved in the death of Kremlin critic and former spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.

A British lawyer had told a preliminary hearing into Litvinenko's poisoning on Thursday that there was evidence the Russian government was involved in his death, which has soured relations between Moscow and London.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said: "We hope that as a result of the (legal process) ... all the baseless allegations about some kind of a Russian involvement in this affair will be dispelled once and for all."

Litvinenko, who had been granted British citizenship and become a vocal critic of the Kremlin, died in November 2006 after someone slipped polonium-210, a rare radioactive isotope, into his cup of tea at a London hotel.

Lukashevich, asked about the lawyer's statement at a weekly briefing, acknowledged that Litvinenko's death was still troubling ties between Russia and Britain. He said the inquest must be conducted "transparently and without prejudice."

British police and prosecutors say there is enough evidence to charge two former KGB agents, Andrei Lugovoy and Dmitry Kovtun, but Moscow has flatly rejected calls to extradite them.

Hugh Davies, an attorney acting on behalf of the British inquest, said on Thursday that an examination of government material establishes "a prima facie case in the culpability of the Russian state in the death of Alexander Litvinenko".

Technology has dramatically altered how we shop.

From mobile payment apps like Square to location-based coupons that pop up when we walk into a store to virtual dressing rooms, retail will never be the same after Silicon Valley and Silicon Alley get done with it.?

We once relied solely on human interaction in retail stores?with a little catalog shopping on the side. Those days are approaching an end as companies like Apple allow you to pay for a purchase and walk out of a store without talking to anyone. Meanwhile, robots are taking the place of the humans who check inventory on the shelves.

Sao Paulo awarded Copa Sudamericana final

SAO PAULO (AP) ? The image of Brazilian soccer in the lead up to the 2014 World Cup took a hit Wednesday when the final of the Copa Sudamericana was abandoned after visiting club Tigre accused security officials of pulling guns and beating its players.

"What happened at the final was a serious setback to Brazil's image as host of next years' Confederations' Cup and the World Cup," Juca Kfouri, one of Brazil's leading sports commentators said by telephone.

Sao Paulo was awarded the title when Tigre refused to take the field for the second half of Wednesday's second leg of the final. Sao Paulo was leading 2-0, with the first leg having ended scoreless.

Officials of the Argentine club said their players and staff were beaten by security officials in the dressing room area at halftime and guns were drawn. The trouble off the pitch followed scuffles between the teams at the end of the first half.

Nestor Gorosito, the coach of Tigre, declined to take his team back on the field for the second half. He said security officials pulled guns on his players while others clubbed players and team officials.

"Rocks were hurled at the bus carrying the Argentine players to the stadium. They were not allowed to practice at the stadium and the team's private guards were reported to have threatened the Argentine players with guns" Kfouri said. "These barbaric things took place all the time last century between the 1920s and 1970s. It is a sad return through the tunnel of time to the deplorable past of South American football."

"A past that caused European teams like Milan and Real Madrid to refuse to come to South America to dispute the Intercontinental Cup" the predecessor to the Club World Cup, he added.

The chaotic scenes in Sao Paulo, before a sellout crowd of 65,000 at Morumbi stadium, is sure to trouble FIFA ? the governing body of world soccer ? which already has been frustrated by slow preparations for the World Cup.

Most of FIFA's angst so far has been focused on getting stadiums and new infrastructure in place. Now security also looms as a concern for the World Cup, which will be played at 12 venues across the country.

"Unfortunately, I don't think what happened on Wednesday will prompt FIFA to take any specific action regarding violence and security, and by Monday this whole thing will be forgotten," Kfouri said.

Violence on and off the pitch still blights many matches in South America, with Brazil and Argentina particularly affected. For the World Cup, FIFA relies on local officials and police to enforce safety at the stadiums.

The Confederations Cup, a preparatory event for the World Cup featuring eight national teams, will be played next year at six venues in Brazil.

With the 2016 Summer Games slated for Rio de Janeiro, Olympic officials also are sure to review the incident.

The trouble at the Morumbi stemmed from confrontations between the teams following a first half in which the hosts had taken a 2-0 lead on goals from Lucas and Osvaldo.

It was unclear what happened in the dressing room area, but Argentine television showed what appeared to be blood-spattered walls. Argentine television also showed several Tigre staff members with bruises and bloody faces.

"Police entered and struck our players with clubs," Gorosito told Argentine television. "It was crazy. What happened was crazy."

A Brazilian police officer who identified himself was Major Gonzaga told reporters police were called to break up a fight between Argentine players and Sao Paulo security guards, but that that no one was armed and that police did not act violently.

Joao Paulo de Jesus Lopes, one of Sao Paulo's vice presidents told reporters that Tigre players tried to "break into the Brazilian team's locker room and injured some of Sao Paulo's security guards.

"We were fighting for 15 minutes with people trained by, and wearing the colors of Sao Paulo. There was no need to do something like this. They were winning the match," said Tigre keeper Albil.

Romer Osuna, a Bolivian official with CONMEBOL, South America's governing body of soccer, said Tigre players were afraid to return to the field.

"The Tigre people declined to play because they considered security was not good enough," Osuna told Fox Sports.

Referee Enrique Osses of Chile awarded the victory to Sao Paulo after waiting about 30 minutes for Tigre to retake the field.

Sao Paulo scored twice in five minutes in the first half ? a left-footed drive from Lucas in the 23rd and a lobbing shot from the right wing by Osvaldo in the 28th.

Sao Paulo, one of Latin America's most famous clubs, is a three-time winner of the Copa Libertadores, South America's most prestigious club tournament. It has also won the Club World Cup once, and twice won the Intercontinental Cup, the predecessor to the Club World Cup.

This was the club's first Copa Sudamericana title.

Tigre was playing in its first international final and has never won the Argentine first-division title.

Movie review: Hopkins cuts a fine figure in 'Hitchcock' | The Salt ...

This film image released by Fox Searchlight shows Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in "Hitchcock." (AP Photo/Fox Searchlight, Suzanne Tenner)

Review ? Story behind ?Psycho? a fun time for movie lovers.

"Hitchcock" is a movie lover?s movie ? a fun, free-wheeling look at the creation of a classic movie and a tender profile of the little-known life of a Hollywood legend.

Of course, the legend is Alfred Hitchcock, and director Sacha Gervasi and screenwriter John J. McLaughlin catch the "Master of Suspense" at a suspenseful crossroads. As the movie begins, it?s 1959 and Hitchcock (played by Anthony Hopkins) is coming off the success of his latest film, "North by Northwest," and casting about for his next project.

?

HHH

?Hitchcock?

Anthony Hopkins impersonates the great director in a behind-the-scenes drama loaded with treats for movie lovers.

Where ? Broadway Centre Cinemas.

When ? Opens Friday, Dec. 14.

Rating ? PG-13 for some violent images, sexual content and thematic material.

Running time ? 96 minutes.

The studios, being studios, offer him variations on the tried-and-true. (He rejects a pitch to adapt Ian Fleming?s "Casino Royale," with Cary Grant as James Bond, saying, "I?ve already made that movie. It?s called ?North by Northwest.??") Instead, he becomes fascinated with Robert Bloch?s novel about a murderer, based on the real-life case of killer Ed Gein. The novel?s title: Psycho.

The studios are repulsed by the idea, saying they won?t bankroll what is essentially a schlocky B-grade horror movie. But Hitchcock persists, arguing that horror movies are deemed unworthy because a really good director has never made one.

Hitchcock has support in his corner: his agent, Lew Wasserman (Michael Stuhlbarg), and, most important, his wife, Alma Reville (Helen Mirren). Alma is Hitch?s toughest critic, best sounding board, shrewdest editor and smartest casting director (she suggests Hitchcock cast Janet Leigh ? smartly played here by Scarlett Johansson ? based on her performance in Orson Welles? "Touch of Evil"). She also has endured decades of Hitchcock?s obsessions over blond starlets and the slights that come with life in the great man?s shadow.

Mirren is utterly winning as Alma, even though she?s saddled with the movie?s silliest melodrama. This involves Alma, feeling left out of Hitchcock?s world, spending time on a writing project with an old acquaintance, screenwriter Whitfield Cook (Danny Huston) ? who may have amorous intentions toward her.

The best parts of "Hitchcock" come when Gervasi (whose previous credit is the rock documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil") immerses us in the life on the set. Johansson is joined by solid performances from James D?Arcy (as the nervous and deeply closeted Anthony Perkins) and Jessica Biel (as co-star Vera Miles, a former Hitchcock favorite reduced to second-tier status). Movie fans will gobble up the rich backstage details of filming "Psycho" and Hitchcock?s efforts to get it past the censors. And Gervasi has embedded sly references to eight Hitchcock classics, just for the heck of it.

Mostly, "Hitchcock" lets Sir Anthony Hopkins play while we watch. His impersonation of the director?s avuncular cadences is dead-on, his chemistry with Mirren is charming, and his connection to Ed Gein (who also was an inspiration for "The Silence of the Lambs") adds a layer of ironic wit. Somewhere, Hitch is probably enjoying a good chuckle.

Depression eased quickly with experimental drug: Works in brain like Ketamine, with fewer side effects, study suggests

Dec. 12, 2012 ? A drug that works through the same brain mechanism as the fast-acting antidepressant ketamine briefly improved treatment-resistant patients' depression symptoms in minutes, with minimal untoward side effects, in a clinical trial conducted by the National Institutes of Health. The experimental agent, called AZD6765, acts through the brain's glutamate chemical messenger system.

Existing antidepressants available through prescription, which work through the brain's serotonin system, take a few weeks to work, imperiling severely depressed patients, who can be at high risk for suicide. Ketamine also works in hours, but its usefulness is limited by its potential for dissociative side-effects, including hallucinations. It is being studied mostly for clues to how it works.

"Our findings serve as a proof of concept that we can tap into an important component of the glutamate pathway to develop a new generation of safe, rapid-acting practical treatments for depression," said Carlos Zarate, M.D., of the NIH's National Institute of Mental Health, which conducted the research.

Zarate, and colleagues, reported on their results online Dec. 1, 2012 in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

AZD6765, like ketamine, works by blocking glutamate binding to a protein on the surface of neurons, called the NMDA receptor. It is a less powerful blocker of the NMDA receptor, which may be a reason why it is better tolerated than ketamine.

About 32 percent of 22 treatment-resistant depressed patients infused with ASD6765 showed a clinically meaningful antidepressant response at 80 minutes after infusion that lasted for about half an hour -- with residual antidepressant effects lasting two days for some. By contrast, 52 percent of patients receiving ketamine show a comparable response, with effects still detectable at seven days. So a single infusion of ketamine produces more robust and sustained improvement, but most patients continue to experience some symptoms with both drugs.

However, depression rating scores were significantly better among patients who received AZD6765 than in those who received placebos. The researchers deemed this noteworthy, since, on average, these patients had failed to improve in seven past antidepressant trials, and nearly half failed to respond to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

The patients reported only minor side effects, such as dizziness and nausea, which were not significantly different from those experienced with the placebo.

Zarate and colleagues say their results warrant further trials with AZD6765, testing whether repeated infusions a few times per week or higher doses might produce longer-lasting results.

India launches probe into Wal-Mart lobbying report

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's government announced an inquiry into lobbying practices by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Wednesday after a report that the giant retailer had pressed U.S. lawmakers to help gain access to foreign markets.

Wal-Mart disclosed in a report to the U.S. Senate that it had paid $25 million over four years to lobby American lawmakers to help gain access to overseas markets, including India.

The report spurred opposition lawmakers, who oppose Wal-Mart's entry into India, to call for an inquiry into whether any money was spent in India, even though the disclosure filing only referred to lobbying activities in the United States.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath told parliament a retired judge would be appointed to lead an investigation "pertaining to Wal-Mart's lobbying".

No further details were available about the inquiry.

Government officials have said privately there is nothing to investigate since Wal-Mart's lobbying activities in the United States were not illegal.

Wal-Mart has said allegations that a routine U.S. lobbying disclosure form reflects improper conduct on their part in India is false.

"This disclosure has nothing to do with political or governmental contacts with India government officials," said a Bharti Walmart spokesperson.

"It shows that our business interest in India was discussed with U.S. government officials along with 50 or more other topics during a three-month period."

All organizations which expend more than $11,500 annually on lobbying activities and employ at least one lobbyist must register and file the quarterly reports, the spokesperson added.

The government wants to resolve the matter as quickly as possible so that parliament can pass important financial bills before the winter session ends on December 20.

Wal-Mart has found itself entangled in a fight between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's fragile minority government and political opponents determined to thwart supermarket reform which, they say, will destroy the livelihoods of millions of small store owners.

Opposition parties have sought to portray Singh's government as the pawn of powerful foreign companies ahead of national elections due in 2014.

Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart has been the most active among foreign supermarket operators keen to push their way into India's $450 billion retail market.

Shocked friends: Mall gunman was fun, sweet

Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Adam Phillips answers questions at a press conference regarding the 22-year-old gunman who opened fire at an Oregon mall, killing two people before killing himself.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

The man who shot two people to death and wounded another at an Oregon shopping mall had suffered a series of setbacks in the past year, but those who knew him say they are mystified by his violent assault.

Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, had lost his driver's license after a couple of speeding tickets, broken up with his girlfriend, been evicted from his apartment, then quit his job and told friends he was going to Hawaii -- only to apparently miss his flight last weekend.

Roberts was identified Wednesday as the man who opened fire in the food court of the crowded Clackamas Town Center southeast of Portland. Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45, of West Linn and?Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, of Portland were killed. Kristina Shevchenko, 15, of Portland, was wounded?and in serious condition.

Police say Roberts did not have a criminal history, but that he stole the AR-15 rifle that he used in the shooting. Roberts killed himself at the mall.

Before quitting his job, Roberts told co-workers at the sandwich shop where he worked that he had inherited money and planned to travel to Hawaii and perhaps move there. His ex-girlfriend, Hannah Sansburn, 20, told ABC News that he sold all of his belongings in preparation for moving .

"He had his plane ticket and was ready to go," she said. "He was supposed to catch a flight Saturday and I texted him, and asked how his flight went, and he told me, 'Oh, I got drunk and didn't make the flight.'"

She told ABC she wondered if Roberts was ever really planning on moving, and said she was shocked he could have committed such a terrible act.

?The person I knew would have never ever done anything like done this. Not in a million years,? she said. ?He was just too sweet. Never mean to anybody.?

According to?a profile in The Oregonian newspaper, a friend of Roberts' stepfather said Roberts had planned to enter the Navy after graduating from Oregon City High School in 2008 but couldn't because of an injury.

"After that, everything kind of fell apart for him," Rosalie DeDore told the newspaper.

A friend, Benjamin Eshbach, described Roberts as fun and light-hearted.

"It's a very difficult thing to wrap my head around," Eshbach, who said he played chess with Roberts and went out with him, told the newspaper. "It's hard to imagine him being any other way. Something doesn't fit."

In recent months, Roberts had moved into the basement of a small home in southeast Portland with two roommates, according to neighbors?who told NBC station KGW that he seemed like a nice man.

Roberts went to Clackamas Community College in 2009, but withdrew after his first year of classes, reported KGW. In high school, he had been an "average" student who didn't do extracurricular activities, and had no disciplinary actions on his record, district officials told KGW.

On Wednesday, Roberts' aunt?provided a hand-written note?through a friend to reporters?apologizing for his behavior. KATU of Portland reported that family friends said?Tami Roberts is Roberts' aunt but raised him. She wrote that she?had "no understanding or explanation for her son's behavior" and adding she was "very sad and wants everyone to know that she is so sorry what Jake did, it's so out of his character."
